Severe weather can strike at anytime, especially during the hurricane season months of late summer and into the fall. Are you prepared if the power goes out? Here are are few simple tips to help you prepare for power outages.
Keep a backup lighting source ready
One of the easiest options to keep on hand for backup lighting if the power goes out are a couple of flashlights and plenty of batteries. If you want a hands free option you could also look at a headlamp. For extended outages a battery powered lantern can also come in handy. If all you have are candles, those will work, but can be a fire hazard.
Have some extra food and water
Depending on the situation, the power could be out for a couple of minutes or a few days (or more!). Make sure to have some perishable food in reserve along with plenty of water. If the power is out as a result of a bad weather event, then it may be difficult to get to the store or order food.
Put together a first aid kit
A first aid kit is something that would be a good idea to have even if there isn’t a power outage. Besides traditional first aid supplies (bandages, gauze, splints, etc.) you may also want to keep medications such as aspirin, pain relievers, antihistamines , and any other medications you may need.
Consider an alternative power source
If you have the ability, a back-up power source such as a generator can be a great asset during a power outage. Generators can range greatly in pricing and type, so you may be able to find one that fits your needs. If you aren’t able to get a generator you could also look at getting a portable battery charger for to keep your electronics powered.
Hopefully these tips will help the next time you experience a power outage!
